There’s something timeless about lighting a candle. In magick, candles hold a special kind of power. Not because they’re fancy and not because they’re pretty. But simply because they’re pure, focused energy and that’s exactly what magick is all about.

I use candles in my own practice often, and you might be surprised to hear that I don’t go for the heavily scented, color-coded ones. Most of the time, a simple white candle is all I need. And in most magical rituals that I do, this is the only "tool" that I even use.

Sometimes, I’ll write a simple wish or intention on a piece of paper, light the candle, and just sit with it. No elaborate ritual, no complicated words. Just me, the fire, and the feeling. You may feel how the air shifts somehow but this simple sort of action.

What Kind of Candle Should You Use?

Let’s keep it real: Use what you have.

Sure, color correspondences exist, red for passion, green for money, white for purity, black for protection, but at the end of the day, the power comes from you. I’ve used super simple white small candles from the grocery store and... guess what... it worked just fine.

If you want to match colors, go for it. But don’t let that stop you from doing magick if you only have one candle on hand.

Candles ARE Portals of Power

Here’s something I’ve noticed over time: candles create a kind of container for energy. When I light one, I feel like I’m opening a little portal. The energy shifts in the room, it gets quieter, more intentional, more sacred and changes my energy also.

That’s why I often use a candle when I attempt a manifestation or a spell. It becomes a witness to your magick is like a small partner in the ritual. And sometimes, when you watch that flame dance, it feels like it’s speaking back, that you start to move energy around you and within you.
